His grandad lent him the gear. Tiësto played his track. What happened in between shows how technology can widen a life.
Jordan Tilstone grew up hearing about nights he had been born too late to attend.
His mum and dad had been part of the 1990s dance scene. They told Jordan and his sisters about raves arriving from Manchester and Birmingham and about DJs such as Carl Cox, Sasha and John Digweed. Dance music was a constant at home and in the car. By sixteen, Jordan was constantly hunting for new tracks.
Then his grandfather entered the story. He was a mobile DJ, with equipment a teenager would otherwise have struggled to get near. After Jordan finished his GCSEs, his grandad lent him PA systems and lights. Jordan turned his house into a club, programming the evening from warm-up to the biggest records and back down again. Soon he was organising parties for other people too, promoting events before he knew the term.
His grandad also began taking him to gigs. Jordan started as the roadie, then covered the decks during breaks while being told what to play. At a school prom at Alton Towers, that changed: his grandad told him to choose for himself. Jordan later recalled the feeling of controlling the energy of the room and its soundtrack.
That story could have happened decades ago. What happened next is more revealing.
Jordan studied the careers of DJs he admired and noticed that the people building serious careers were producing their own music. So he downloaded production software and began learning through YouTube, before later studying music production formally. His first record deal still came the old way: he got himself backstage at Ministry of Sound, met Paul Oakenfold’s A&R man and later sent him his tracks.
Today Jordan can make, release and perform music, promote it, curate other artists and create his own Claywork events — including raves in a pottery museum and a Leeds church. Technology has widened his reach without making the people, places or relationships around it irrelevant.
Earlier this year, an email offering him a place at Creamfields arrived while he was at his day job. Jordan saw the subject line, kept the news to himself until the working day was over and, when he reached his car, screamed. This summer Tiësto played Jordan’s Broken Fragments on his PRISMATIC show. Last Thursday, Jordan played Creamfields himself.
And this is why I like his story. We don’t know how it ends. There is no superstar verdict to work backwards from. Technology and dance music will change again, and his ambitions may change with them.
But already, the distance between wanting to make something and putting it into the world is radically different from when his grandfather assembled a mobile disco. A young producer can now occupy much more of the lifecycle himself: the studio can be software, learning can arrive through a screen, and a track can move from a laptop to a radio show or club. Labels, venues, engineers and audiences still matter, but the route has changed.
For Jordan, that has widened a life.
What was inside the distance?
None of this began with AI. Desktop publishing changed print; digital photography absorbed tasks that once belonged to the darkroom; music technology put capabilities once confined to expensive studios within reach of teenagers in bedrooms. We have been shortening the distance between intention and outcome for a long time.
The more interesting question is what happens to everything that used to occupy the distance. Some of it was friction: expense, waiting, scarcity and gatekeeping. Removing that can be liberating. Jordan did not need permission from a studio owner before he could discover whether he could produce.
But other things were living inside the same chain: expertise, employment, correction and learning. Beginners watched experienced people work, made mistakes while someone more knowledgeable was nearby, and gradually acquired distinctions no job description could teach. The answer is not to preserve every old role. But removing work and replacing everything that work happened to teach are not necessarily the same thing.
The same compression can feel rather different inside an organisation. A Reuters Institute fellowship paper by journalist Nabila Bana describes video journalists being expected to script, film, edit, publish and analyse their work — greater creative control accompanied by a workload that can contribute to burnout.
Did technology give you five people’s capability — or five people’s jobs?
Sometimes the answer may be both. From one seat, fewer hand-offs mean freedom. From another, they mean a livelihood disappears. From a third, the working day quietly absorbs another role.
Greater technological leverage does not always look like Jordan’s story. Andrei Lupas and his research group had spent close to a decade trying to resolve the structure of a protein involved in transmitting signals across cell membranes. They already had deep expertise and experimental evidence. What they lacked was a structure that made sense of what they possessed.
AlphaFold supplied it. Lupas said its AI-generated models allowed his team to solve the structure that had held them up for nearly ten years and restart the wider research.
That matters beyond one laboratory. Protein shape is fundamental to understanding what proteins do, what goes wrong in disease and where a medicine might intervene, while experimentally determining a structure can take a year or more. AlphaFold’s database now contains predictions for more than 200 million proteins and, according to DeepMind, is used by more than three million researchers across more than 190 countries, including in work on rare genetic conditions, heart disease and drug discovery.
The human consequence is not that a computer has “solved medicine”. Predictions still need interpretation, experimental checking and scientists who understand what the result means. What changed was the bottleneck: work that could consume years can sometimes become available in minutes, leaving more time to investigate what the structure means and whether it might eventually contribute to a treatment.
Jordan’s tools widened how much of a lifecycle he could occupy. AlphaFold made years of specialist depth more powerful.
Rosalind, a farmer in Kenya, shows the same principle at another scale. As the World Bank’s Anna Bjerde told it after visiting her field, a visitor downloaded an AI-enabled tool, photographed an unhealthy plant on Rosalind’s phone and received a diagnosis of black rot within seconds. Rosalind already understood the disease and what to do. What became available was one missing distinction, at the moment it mattered.
The technology never meets an empty person. It meets whatever knowledge, experience, relationships, infrastructure, confidence and opportunity are already there. That may be why the same tool can change two lives so differently.
Now the boundary itself is moving
AI makes this old pattern more urgent because the same general technology can participate across writing, software, research, design, science, education and management. It is also moving beyond the reassuring idea that machines will do the routine work while experienced people simply move upwards into judgement.
I see that in my own work as an Associate Director. AI can retrieve information and produce material, but I also use it to compare arguments, test assumptions, spot what has been missed and consider whether new evidence deserves to change my view. I still make the judgement and remain responsible for what follows, but the technology is participating far beyond the first draft.
The ladder is beginning to compress from both directions.
That creates a harder developmental question. People have acquired judgement partly by doing the work beneath it: getting things wrong, watching others, dealing with consequences and learning which differences matter. If technology can assist with that work and some of the synthesis people were learning towards, defining the human future as “whatever AI cannot do” is a poor strategy. The boundary will move again.
It is moving around evidence too. An applicant can use AI to present what they have done more effectively, while an employer can use AI to process far more applications. Signals that once distinguished people can become easier to manufacture. The beginnings of an evidence arms race are visible.
And the same technology helping somebody create new evidence of who they are becoming is increasingly capable of finding, combining and interpreting evidence of who they used to be. That is the tension I call Crump’s Law:
Evidence of an earlier moment can remain while the person keeps changing. Later, both can meet again in a new judgement.
Which takes me back to Jordan and his grandfather. A mobile-DJ rig helped a teenager discover what it felt like to control the energy of a room. Years later, some of the rooms that separated that teenager from making, releasing and performing his own music can fit inside a laptop. Tiësto can play something Jordan made while Jordan’s story is still unfinished.
Technology has shortened the route. What matters is not simply how much more Jordan — or any of us — can now do alone, but what that changed journey is doing to the person travelling it.
