What it is

What is SHAPED Field Notes?

SHAPED begins with a simple distinction: Habits change what you repeatedly do. Conditions change what becomes available in you.

SHAPED Field Notes is where I share the thinking behind the book: short essays, observations and practical questions for people interested in how we are shaped — and how we shape life back.

Some notes will be about recovery: how parts of us can become less available under pressure, depletion, grief, stress or difficult conditions.

Some will be about discovery: how new parts of us can appear when life gives us different rooms, rhythms, relationships and forms of evidence.

What else might become available if the conditions changed?

What you’ll receive

Each Field Note usually offers:

One

observation

A short reflection on identity, behaviour, attention, evidence or change.

One

question

A way to examine a conclusion you may have been living inside.

One small

experiment

A gentle invitation to notice what changes when conditions change.

This is not a course, programme or productivity system. It is a way of seeing more carefully.

Who it is for

SHAPED Field Notes is for readers interested in:

  • identity and behaviour change
  • habits, conditions and environment
  • recovery from depletion, stress or life narrowing
  • discovery, meaning and human possibility
  • attention, family, work, health and ordinary life
  • why people are often judged from too little evidence

It is for anyone who has ever wondered: I don’t feel like myself anymore. Why do I keep slipping back? Is this really who I am? What if the conclusion I reached was based on partial evidence? What might become available under different conditions?

Why subscribe

Why subscribe?

Because the evidence you have gathered about yourself may be real, but it may not be complete. A version of you formed under pressure may not be the whole of you. A conclusion reached in depletion may not deserve the final word. A life that looks settled may still contain undiscovered possibility.

SHAPED Field Notes is an invitation to reopen the case — gently, practically and without hype.

What you will not receive

No noise. No hard sell. No “unlock your potential” language. No promise that change is simple. No reducing a life to mindset, motivation or willpower.

Just thoughtful, practical work from the ideas behind SHAPED.

If you are new to this work, these are good places to begin:

  • The behaviour was real. The conclusion may not be.
  • Habits change what you repeatedly do. Conditions change what becomes available in you.
  • You may not lack discipline. You may lack the conditions.
