The author behind the book

About Neill

Neill Crump is the author of SHAPED.

I write about what brings more of us forward – and what quietly gets in the way.

My forthcoming book, SHAPED, grew from a simple observation: people are often judged from too little evidence. A behaviour is seen. A conclusion is formed. A label sticks. Over time, that conclusion can begin to shape the next room, the next opportunity, the next expectation, the next version of a life.

The behaviour was real. The conclusion may not be.

SHAPED asks what else might be true when we see more of the story.

Why the book

Why I wrote SHAPED

I did not arrive at this idea through theory alone.

At seventeen, my school results looked like a verdict. They were not. Later, with different support and conditions, I completed a degree, built a successful career across commercial and public service and competed in 6 age group world championships across 3 different sports including the Ironman in Hawaii.

None of these later facts erase the earlier evidence. They change what that evidence is allowed to mean.

Across work, family life, sport and writing, I have seen people look very different when something around them changes — a room, a relationship, a responsibility, a routine, an expectation. I have also seen how quickly one moment can become a story about who someone is.

That is the heart of SHAPED: look wider, try something real and be willing to change your mind when life gives you a reason to.

Background

My background

Today, I work in health and care innovation, where questions about systems, behaviour, evidence and change are part of the daily work. Decades of working across commercial, public and third sector settings — have shaped how I see the world.

These different worlds have taught me to be wary of simple verdicts. Outcomes rarely come from one factor. A result may be real without telling the whole story of the person who produced it.

SHAPED is not a book about fixing people. It is a book about seeing more carefully, finding the action that remains and building better evidence about what may still be possible.

What I write about

Through SHAPED Field Notes, I explore ordinary moments that make us rethink what we thought we knew about ourselves and other people.

Tuesday: a longer story or idea to think with.

Friday: a shorter reflection, question or small experiment you can try in ordinary life.
